5 Reasons to do UX

Thought about working in UX, but unsure if it's the right fit for you? We've outlined the key reasons why you should take the leap and start your career in UX now.

#1 User Experience is in high demand across different industries.

The User Experience industry is booming! If you look at the vacancies on job boards and LinkedIn, the demand is huge and increasing every day.

Businesses are increasingly starting to understand that an intuitive and seamless experience with digital products is crucial. The COVID-19 pandemic forced customers to purchase from the safety of their homes and has tremendously impacted the need for effective e-commerce. All events combined, have given the expectations for users that the interaction across every digital product needs to be seamless. From a business perspective, this is not only beneficial for establishing and nurturing a great relationship with your customers, but also it is key to your brand reputation and profitability.

#2 Pursue a tech job without coding skills.

Even though you are working intensively with a digital product, becoming a great UX'er doesn't require any coding or programming skills. So, for those who see that as a big obstacle for pursuing a career in tech, a role in User Experience is a great access point to enter the tech field.

Even though some generic coding knowledge or a dedicated specialisation in coding could be a good addition to your UX capability, you don't need to be a coder or developer. Code for a UX'er can be a tool for enabling better expression and communication, but as a UX'er you have many other skills to master.

#3 The UX Unicorn is a rare creature.

You may have come across the term of a UX Unicorn, and like all unicorns, they're rare creatures. When we talk about a UX unicorn, we imagine someone who is able to excel across the end-to-end design process of User Experience. To excel in the entire flow, implies you need to be an expert in research, coding, visual design, UI, wireframing, prototyping and all other activities necessary to design a seamless user experience for your digital product.

And even though there are some Unicorns out there, the great thing about UX is that you do not need to be a Unicorn to be successful in your job. You don't need to be a graphic designer to design great UI, you don't need to be developer to create an interactive prototype, and you don't need to have expertise across the full scope of activities that sit in an end-to-end design process.

#4 Make technology available for everyone.

With rapid digitalisation comes technological advancement, and it's sometimes hard to keep up, especially if you're not too tech-savvy. As a UX'er you have the ability to design inclusive products for both complex and basic elements of product interaction.

Whether it is shopping online, booking your holidays or even paying your bills, good User Experience benefits everyone and especially those that require extra help or are often overlooked. Doing UX gives you the opportunity to make people's lives easier and convenient, which directly adds to their quality of life.

#5 Pick the UX role that fits you best.

A career in User Experience means having an opportunity to have a specific expertise in a role that fits you best. The end-to-end User Experience design process knows the many different elements and stages that require specific insights and gives you the ability to both deepen your knowledge or develop your ability in a T-shaped manner.

Whether it's user research, testing, UI, prototyping or implementation, there's an expertise and role that exists across many awesome organisations and they are waiting to utilise your unique set of skills.
